Milan outside the Quadrilatero fashion square: Multi-faceted. Gourmet. Hi-tech
Milan - fashion capital and shopping city. For those who want to go outside the usual round of the most famous shopping areas, Milan has much to offer. Need an idea or an address? Away from the Quadrilatero fashion square, in via Cola di Rienzo no. 8 there is a space invented by Antonio Marras: Marras is more than just a showroom. It is a bookshop, a cultural showcase and a courtyard where you can sit and relax and, if you’re lucky, chat with the eclectic designer from Sardinia. If you are a fan of design, don’t miss Hi Tech and Cargo, shops belonging to the same distribution chain but at two different addresses. Hi Tech is in the centre in Piazza XXV Aprile. Cargo is a little further out where there is much more space. Once, this was the site of the Ovaltine factory. Today, the 11,000 square metres in Via Privata A. Meucci 43 has an endless number of fashion, design and style objects on sale. What to buy: furniture, accessories, kitchen utensils, small electrical appliances, linen and a whole range of products. For ‘foodies’ the drogherie or grocery stores of Milan are heaven on earth and would need a whole book to do them justice. In a few words, the fondeghee (local dialect for grocery store) are just the right place to buy something special in Milan. Something to suit all pockets. Here is one worth noting: Drogheria Soana, in Corso Magenta 1. Rare spirits, organic honey, top quality coffee, soaps with old-style wrapping. You will find all these and more in the wood framed windows of the historic Drogheria de Ponti in via Plinio 17. The shop also has an on-line store.
A visit to Milan would not be complete without a look at the Isola fashionista quarter at the back of the modern Porta Nuova district. Emerging designers, alternative boutiques and jewellery designers such as the much acclaimed Monica Castiglioni all have their ateliers and stores here in via Borsieri, via Pastrengo and via Confalonieri.
